3.5 THE MECHANISM OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE

It is impossible to speak with absolute certainty about the mechanism of Divine Providence. However, there are some suppositions that can be considered.

In the chapter entitled ‘A Short Introduction to Kabbalah’, I mentioned the concept of higher and lower knowledge, as introduced by Alter Rebbe. Let us remind the reader that higher knowledge is the inherent state of the Almighty – Ein Sof (not finite). It encompasses everything, including that which does not exist, as well as that which will be, without discerning between good and evil, and without exerting any direct impact on our world. Lower knowledge relates to the creation of worlds and is to be found in the system of sefirot. In my view, this is the active intellect and it is located in the sefirah of Chochma in the world of Atzilut. In the process of the informational exchange (see Chapter 1, ‘Creation’, page 31), information enters into the higher sefirah of Chochma in the world of Atzilut. The reverse effect occurs through the sefirah of Keter, which symbolises the Creator’s will and desire. As we have already noted, each of the sefirot contains the remaining sefirot, presenting itself as a fractal. Therefore, apart from the higher sefirah of Chochma in the world of Atzilut, and also the sefirot of Chochma in the worlds of Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah, there are countless multitudes of Chochma contained within the other sefirot. They are all combined and form a kind of ‘intellectual’ skeleton of the system of spiritual worlds.

PRAYER

Daily prayers were ordered by the sages after the destruction of the second Temple, to replace sacrifices. According to the Talmud, prayer can change the course of Divine Providence. Let us examine this more closely.

The Temple was a unique phenomenon on earth. Within it, there was a direct communication channel with higher spiritual worlds. After the destruction of the Temple, people lost the ability to use this channel, so prayer was introduced. However, certain conditions need to be fulfilled for the prayer to be heard and actioned:

1. It must be heard.

2. An information channel must be created for this purpose.

3. This channel should be free from noise and interference.

4. The channel should be used to transmit meaningful information.

A person creates an informational channel as a result of active participation in the informational exchange with spiritual worlds by means of studying the Torah and fulfilling the commandments. The purity of the channel is protected from noise and interference by means of special techniques of prayer (kavvanah), which require deep focus and concentration.

If a praying person possesses the required knowledge and fulfils the commandments of the Torah, then during the prayer process the sefirah of Chochma in his soul is activated, which, in turn, is connected with the sefirah of Chochma in the higher worlds. In this case, the prayer reaches the highest level.

If a person does not possess the required knowledge and recites the prayer automatically, without understanding its meaning, then only his soul’s midot will be activated.
